We are pleased to present “THE GOLDEN NAGOYA,” a group exhibition featuring ten artists.
Throughout history, gold has been revered as a symbol of authority and prosperity.
Nagoya possesses a unique “golden culture”—from the lavish aesthetic of the Momoyama period championed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the golden *shachihoko* (mythical carp-tigers) of Nagoya Castle, to the pride and decorative spirit embodied in local craftsmanship. This exhibition reinterprets that historical DNA through the lens of contemporary art.
Around ten ceramic artists and sculptors have created new works centered on the theme of gold.
Whether through tea bowls, vessels, art objects, or sculptures, each artist unearths the desires, beliefs, fictions, hopes, and memories lying beneath that “radiance,” giving them new form.
This is neither a mere extension of traditional crafts nor simply an expression of luxury.
It is an exhibition designed to update Nagoya’s golden culture for the future.
A special tea ceremony utilizing the exhibited works will also be held during the exhibition period.
Through a quiet experience where contemporary art and the tea ceremony intersect, visitors can physically experience the sensation of “art in use.”
Additionally, a visitor-participation event—”Vote for Your Favorite Work”—will be held, allowing the sensibilities of the viewers themselves to shape the value of the exhibition.
—— Is Nagoya’s “gold” merely a symbol of the past?
Or is it an energy that will give birth to a culture yet unseen? ——
